when a trans woman says they hate drag they’re probably not talking about the history of it as an opportunity for trans women, especially twoc, to publicly celebrate their femininity. they’re talking about white cis misogynist men wearing us like a halloween costume and spitting on our heritage and getting praised by cis liberals for being “progressive”
Additionally, they’re talking about the culture that these “white cis misogynist men” (that the op mentioned) have created, known as “drag culture.” Drag culture is primarily populated with cis gay men (many of whom are not white, but most of them are) who constantly perpetuate transmisogyny, both in the past and present.
Here are some of the things that these men have either done or not done that cause cause harm to us as trans women.
- They haven’t stood with us against cissexism/transphobia
- They don’t/haven’t done anything to try to expel TWERFs from the community (neither has a lot of the LG communtiy).
- They sensationalize “Men dressed as women,” which further invalidates the existence of trans women (something that twerfs have actually used against us).
- They blatantly fetishize the idea of men dressed as women (and in doing so, fetishize trans women).
- They perpetuate both sexism and cissexism in their treatment of women (particularly in the way that many of them ignore boundaries when around women, trans or not).
- The culture that they have created has let society both fetishize and dehumanize the queer community as a whole.
As a trans woman, I don’t “hate drag.” I hate “drag culture,” and more specifically, the way that cis gay drag culture has perpetuated violence and hatred towards trans women, and the queer community as a whole.
I’d personally like to add the use of slurs to that list.
Transphobic cis (often gay) men in drag using words like tr*nny and sh*male because they think it’s “funny”. Even better if they’ll pull a fucking RuPaul and still be offended of someone using the for f*ggot.
(Seriously, RuPaul defending the t-slur and still having the audacity to complain about the word f*ggot is why I’ve started to hate drag and have the “asshole until proven otherwise” principle with the performers.)
They’ll be offended if the slur is directed at their identity, but have no problems using slurs that harm other people’s identities.
Bonus point: Cis people adopt a lot of the transphobia espoused by popular drag queens and then try to act like authorities and shut out trans voices because of it. I had a cis gay coworker try to argue with me that he was allowed to say the T-slur because of drag.
So yeah, fuck off.
